This week’s discussion: Allowance

Did you receive an allowance as a child? How much and how often did you get your allowance? My neighbors and I were having a major discussion about what was required to get this money? Was it money you were just given or was it for weekly chores? Were you paid a lump sum or were you paid per chore that you completed? When we asked this question, many people answered “I was allowed to stay there, eat there and basically, live”. Makes me giggle because it’s very true.

As a parent, do you give your children an allowance? What age did your children get their first allowance? What is required for them to get their allowance? What systems have you found that work the best for your household. Let’s hear what everyone has to say and see if we can help some new parents out. One idea I seen that worked well for a short time with my young pre-teens was a bulletin board with job cards and money attached. If they did the job, they got the money right there and then. The harder or dirtier the job, the more the chore paid.
